The State Line

Live on one side, work on the other?

State Line Road splits the metro, and plenty of households cross it every morning. Pick where you live and where you earn your pay to see which returns typically come into play.

1 I live in…
2 I earn my pay in…

Typically on your list

Live in Kansas, work in Kansas City, MO

  1. Federal
    Federal return (Form 1040)

Everyone starts here, whichever side of the line you are on.

  2. Kansas
    Kansas resident return (Form K-40)

Kansas taxes its residents on all of their income, wherever it is earned.

  3. Missouri
    Missouri nonresident return

For the pay earned on the Missouri side. Kansas then typically allows a credit for tax paid to Missouri, so the same income is not fully taxed twice.

  4. KCMO
Kansas City, MO earnings tax (1%)

Nonresidents owe the 1% earnings tax on pay earned inside Kansas City, Missouri city limits. Employers often withhold it; if yours does not, or you are self-employed, it is filed separately.
